Doctor Who is set to return to Spain for filming as work continues on the ninth series.

The BBC science fiction favourite is looking to shoot scenes in the country later this year after Ali Asad - who is taking charge of two episodes in the next run - took to Twitter on Monday and revealed he was going for a "location recce".

The director of photograph tweeted: "Going to Spain on a location recce for the DR."

Before production begins, crew will typically head out to check out the suitability of a certain area, as they prepare for an upcoming shoot.

Details are still scarce for the next series, so it's not clear what world or time Spain will be used for - but the Time Lord is certainly no stranger to the area.

As recently as series 8 episode Kill The Moon, Doctor Who filmed scenes on Spanish island Lanzarote - and now they're moving onto the mainland for the latest shoot.

While little is known about the upcoming new episodes - besides the first of the series being titled The Magician's Apprentice - it seems big changes may be on the way.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the show will go back in time by ditching its newer, edgier style to try to fix its rating slide.

Fans of the show want wholesale changes with some calling for writer Steven Moffatt to be sacked over his baffling, adult plots.

Now a senior BBC source has told the Sunday People: “There will be some tweaks. We are obviously keen for it to appeal to the whole family.”

The latest series has been slammed for being screened too late and having “complicated” and “boring” stories.
