Kim Van Someren, Into Its Own Echo, October at Bridge Productions!

For our October exhibition, Bridge Productions is pleased to present Seattle-based printmaker Kim Van Someren's first solo show at our gallery. Van Someren's work describes an architecture that defies physics-- the hulking, awkwardly traversing forms either lurch forward on impossibly small pins, or stand supernaturally affixed to the ground; impractically cantilevered extensions catapulting out of the frame.

In direct contact with the laborious process of construction, Van Someren's engineering is an invitation to chance as much as the formal inquiry of a material body. For Into Its Own Echo, she builds an inventory of prints on delicate tissue or Japanese kitakata paper to cut up and reuse as collage elements, sometimes screenprinting and drawing in ink around them. In building these new forms, she works intuitively through the pleasure of process, aligning her shapes towards a figure she wants but also allowing for a sense of play and contemplation. Her markmaking is key, as a textural component that grounds the figure in space and adds substance, weight, and corporeal presence. As we play along with Van Someren in guessing what these almost-familiar objects are and to what purpose they serve, we engage with her sense of investigation and exploration into what is possible when such structures become animated.
