Mrs Brown's Boys star Rory Cowan has revealed carbon monoxide levels in his own home could have killed him.

The actor has been baffled by the bouts of fatigue and headaches he had been suffering in his Dublin home.

Mr Cowan said he was shocked to discover the silent killer in his newly-renovated house.

He explained: "I'm still in shock from it all. I thought carbon monoxide happened in old, dilapidated places, my house is totally rebuilt. It's brand new.

"The boiler was only put in a year ago. What saved me is that it was located upstairs in a bedroom at the front of the house rather than downstairs in the kitchen and because it's been a mild winter, I didn't have the boiler on too much."

The actor, who plays Mrs Brown's gay son Rory, also revealed his friend Avri Cinton "probably" saved his life by suggesting he call the gas board.

He told the Irish Daily Star: "I could get the smell of gas occasionally in the house but I did nothing about it.

"Avri came in and insisted that I call Bord Gais. They sent out an emergency guy with a device which started beeping immediately and he said we had to evacuate the house.

"It wasn't the gas - there were toxic levels of carbon monoxide. HE told me afterwards that my friend probably saved my life.

"I actually had a carbon monoxide alarm but it must have been thrown out in the rebuild.

"Everyone should have one in their homes. I never realised I was being slowly poisoned."
