High-tech Babies, Kids, Families, and Education shine at CES 2017
From cradle to diploma to work/life balance, technology is changing every facet of family life. This year’s CES showcased the newest tech for tots, teens, students, adult learners and their parents.

FamilyTech and Kids@Play

This pair of lifestyle-based conferences had an excess of connected riches. We kicked off the conference with a look at emerging technologies for kids: augmented and virtual reality, robots, and enough coding toys to create the next Bill Gates. The new Lego Boost made its debut on our stage.

David Pogue entertained with an irreverent Internet of Things monologue. Randi Zuckerberg revealed the secret sauce behind her new TV series Dot. And we learned how to hack parenting from tech experts including Seagate and Pearl Auto. It’s clear that family life will be changed forever based on the new IoT devices demonstrated by Comcast and Samsung.

FamilyTech TV

FamilyTech TV, our way of bringing coverage of family relevant products to audiences who can’t be with us at CES, is produced by tech expert Andrea Smith and distributed to many of our tech partners. And like years before, the interviews and interactions didn’t disappoint. View the 2017 rundown at FamilyTech TV.

KAPi Awards

On January 6, we held the 2017 KAPi Awards, honoring the best products in kids’ media. One of the most touching moments was the special posthumous award honoring Dr. Seymour Papert, author of Mindstorms and the creator of LOGO and Scratch programming languages. His daughter Artemis and son-in-law Brian Silverman accepted the award on his behalf.

BabyTech Summit

Companies are creating full product lines of connected nursery devices for a new generation of parents. Project Nursery and Happiest Baby are two examples of companies creating high-tech product lines for young parents. On the show floor, everything from smart breast pumps to at-home medical diagnostics tools and cutting-edge cognitive learning wearables made their debus. Willow, a wearable breast pump, garnered awards as one of the best finds of the show from numerous press outlets. The Bump sponsored the second annual Best of Baby Tech Awards, with an A-list panel of judges including The Bump’s Head of Digital Content Julia Wang, Zuckerberg Media CEO Randi Zuckerberg, and others.

TransformingEDU

It’s always a slow and steady march when it comes to education disruption. This year we saw a number of compelling trends and tools. First, the move towards digital credentialing is making its mark on how skills and experience are shared. Credly, Coursera, EdX, Viridis, Open4Learning and others showed how organizations are leveraging lifelong learning via online platforms for employee retooling and job skill growth. Capella shared details about its unique partnership with CareerBuilder and how tech and education can increase employment. Both augmented and virtual realities from companies including VDO360 and Daqri let us imagine a more immersive educational journey. Google Education’s Jaime Casap showed us the future of cloud computing in education and the benefits it can deliver.
