The Island: The Vanished (The Cowboy Gangster / The Base crossover series Book 1) Kindle Edition
As the gangsters are about to lose hope, an unexpected lead takes them to a reluctant witness. With a forced confession, they are still left with little to go on… until two strangers—in search of their own lost loved ones—show up at their front gate with just enough information to suggest they are hunting the same monsters.
THE BASE... After the unexpected, violent encounter with his arch-enemy Alexander Kane, Ardan MacNamara, the founder of The Base sanctuary for child prostitution victims, finally closes the door on his dark past. His honorary adoptive father, Fabian Bloom, who also suffered horrific physical, sexual and mental abuse at Kane's hands, no longer looks over his shoulder, enjoying his new life to the fullest.
But then, Ardan's three sons and their friends are kidnapped in broad daylight, only a few hundred yards from The Base, and the two men's world collapses. Numerous search parties are organized and no stone is left unturned, but the kids are nowhere to be found. The evil force behind the kidnapping seems to be greater and more dangerous than anything Ardan and Fabian have fought against in the past.
Desperate situations require desperate measures and, for the first time, the two men search for help outside their circle of traditional allies—and find it in an unlikely source.

This book contains spoilers from previous books in the Phoenix Club and the Cowboy Gangster series from CJ Bishop and the Base series from H.M. Wolfe so if you haven't read any of their previous books I recommend you to start at the beginning that way you will understand the story of this book way more.
First of I want to congratulate both CJ Bishop and H.M. Wolfe for this co-writing book release!
In exchange for an honest review:
I have read so many books over the years and I have followed this series since the start and I can say for sure no other book has made me want to cry my eyes out while reading the first page of it. Clint and Axel have been on top of my list of Favorite characters since the start of the Cowboy Gangster series.
In this co-written book the world of the Cowboy Gangster by C.J. Bishop and the world of the Base series by H.M Wolfe the two series melt together into one as boys from both groups go suddenly missing. Clint and Cochise had just come home from their mission in Canada when they were told that Axel had traded himself in exchange for the missing girl and with him, Corey, Donald, and John have gone missing as well. Knowing what the kidnappers do to innocent children they are in a fight with time to find their boys. While the same disappearance starts happening to the boys of the Base as well the men are faced to look at a past they tried to forget in the face and to make a choice to start killing again if it means they will find their missing children and family.
In this first book, we don’t get to know much about what has happened to the missing people on both sides but only that something dark and twisted is most likely to happen if they aren’t found in time, and knowing what the kidnappers are willing to do to the children we don’t know yet where we stand if everyone will come back the same ever again or if everyone will come back alive. With the past of many of the characters is being ripped to the surface and wounds that only barely have started to heal are ripped open in full blow once again, everyone is faced with the dark hunt against time.
This book was so hard to read as there is telling about abuse towards minors so trigger warning for anyone that doesn’t have the stomach for it but still after reading all the earlier books in the story this is one you don’t want to miss as you get a deeper look into the characters on both side of the story and so far its a really good written book and I can’t wait to read the last part of this story when everything comes to a brutal ending one way or another. The question is will everyone come back again and will they manage to live with the after-effects of what they have gone through during their captivity once they are found.
This is a must-read for anyone that’s been following this series from the start as the Cowboy Gangster series is coming to an end for this chapter of the story in the next book.
I can't wait for the next book.
-That said, I found the crossover characters and storyline to be confusing. Maybe a preface that would tell important background data from each series would have helped enough to keep me from frustration.
-At this point, I don’t feel the addition of new characters and an entirely new writing-style, with some of the same character names even, from outside the series is yet a welcome change.
-I agreed with some other reviewers who said they felt having the guys run right out into extreme danger was disappointing and vicariously exhausting. We readers need the real celebration parts to balance their gangster / savior stuff. The guys need time with the kids and one another especially after this last sort of ‘kidnapping’ of the guys into a prison situation.

SPOILER-ALERT:
-Regarding the road journey, I wondered why no one went to the richer friends like Max & Horatio to ask for the use of a cargo-type plane to move the kids to a private airstrip near Canada, as they might have been afraid to cross international air space with immigrant kids. Then, the big stand could have taken place in a shorter span of physical distance with equal the amount of peril. If that option wasn’t feasible then at least explain why not. The bad guys who stole the kids had no trouble putting them on a plane and escaping notice of the government…
-The whole thing about Clint carrying his private phone seemed like a mistake he would not have made. I understand the guys have gotten softer, but not stupid.
-Which leads me to why they didn’t leave anyone protecting Kane and the kids even after discovering that his phone was stolen. I kept expecting everyone to be swept into Mansion, or at least a team of security set on Cochise’s home, not to mention Max & Horatio’s where Hope and Luke are staying? Even if Axel had given himself up to save Marisol, and the boys would have been taken, there would at least have been a reasonable and logical response to the peril of having the Cyclops people have the location of EVERYONE Clint knows.
-I love Bishop’s books, so I hesitate to register frustration about this last book or so, but I hope it’s useful feedback.
-And one last thing about the crossover aspect of these books, I found the other writer’s characters and style to be less grounded in the reality I am accustomed to from Bishop books. And I really like that more down to earth world that she has created. I had trouble keeping the other characters straight in my mind, in part because the names were so similar, and also because the style of language is so different and mannered. Hope this won’t continue as a phenomenon in Bishop’s novels. She’s such a great storyteller — and doesn’t need the addition of other writers.

I have finished this book and I still have no clue about who is who and what backstory do they have, as their names are all very similar, some are even the same as characters from the Cowboy Gangster series, and all explanations about their past are very vague. I get it is to keep the mystery and suspense but it really made reading this book a chore more than a joy.
I believe the crossover could have been handled in some other way to make it easier for readers who know nothing about the other story and still catch their interest in buying the books.
