If your mom is now a flower in God's Mommy Garden in heaven, this message is for you. My mom is no longer with me and I find #mothersday every year to be a hard time because I miss the fun things we would have done together. If you're feeling like me, here's what you can do to ease the pain a bit in the midst of the gazillion advertisements and hyper-stoked social media greetings. Let's start by finding a quiet moment to bring the wonderful beautiful memories of your mom fully to mind. Then let's do something that reminds you of her, something which will allow you to fully celebrate her life in a meaningful touching way - cue the video. My mom was an amazing woman of faith who loved to dance, so I'm going to make a donation to a charity in her memory and groove to her favourite music from the 1960's (minus the funky bell-bottom pants and big afro). The goal is simply to acknowledge the importance of remembering that my mom will always live on in my heart, where she still looks after me as she always did no matter what. Here's shouting a big Happy Mother's Day to all moms, whether biological or not, because you rock! To all those who wish they could physically wrap their arms around their moms in person, here's a big soft snuggly long-distance hug just for you 😥 If you're fortunate enough to have your mom here on earth with you, then give her some extra love and celebrate her to the max because life is short ❤ Is there anything else you would add to my list? In another life, I wanted to be a skin care expert 😁 I did the training course, passed the cert test with flying colours, bought my client kit, and headed out excited about the future with this new side hustle in tow. I soon realised I loved doing manicures in addition to skin care clinics, and eventually offered this as an additional "personalized onsite in your living room" service to groups of ladies looking for something fun to do on Friday nights (with wine too of course). Even though I fell down in my marketing and my day job was really demanding, I had a few loyal clients so I pressed on because I truly enjoyed what I was doing. BUT I gave everything all up and sold my kit after my manager at the time said this OUT LOUD to me during a full team meeting about skills outside of work: "You? A skin care and make up artist? Seriously? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ... you are NOT any kind of skin care person Gale, just not ... like, please! Ok, who's next?" 😶 To everyone who's ever had a dream that was: 😞 spit on 😞 cut down 😞 dismissed 😞 laughed at 😞 dissected and discarded I want you to remember that no matter what, you will always have the opportunity to: 👍🏽 Act now 👍🏽 Start small 👍🏽 Dream big 👍🏽 Keep moving 👍🏽 Ignore the haters - BOTTOM LINE - 🎯 Never stop dreaming! 🎯 Never stop slaying! 🎯 Never stop trying! Something to think about as you step into a new week and an even more awesome future than you've ever experienced before. It's Friday afternoon. You've worked really hard all week. You can't wait for the weekend to chill out with friends and family. You get a call at 4:25 p.m. that HR wants to see you. By 4:30 p.m. you've been severed aka no job and very much unemployed. What are you going to do now? How will you tell your family? Why are we always the last to know at the eleventh hour?🤷🏽♀️ [Let's cue the video here]. This situation is tough and it's unexpected; it also leaves a rather bitter taste in our mouths. I would know. But I also know that people can't relate to how traumatic something like this is until they've actually been through it personally. That's why I appreciate everyone who invites me to share my story with their network, organisation or church. I can tell you about the tough lessons I learnt after losing my job immediately during Covid, what made this one of the hardest times of my life at 55 years old, and why it's not too late for you to put some things in place now to soften unforeseen blows that might come later. BOTTOM LINE At the end of the day you might be the last to know, but you'll be the first to hit the ground running as you embrace new pathways to new opportunities ... because it's never ever too late to start over. You can go into work today and have a job. Then go in the very next day and poof - no job! This is what happened to me. After working for 15 years on paper but more like 20 based on the amount of overtime I had logged working/travelling on weekends and after hours work 🙄 The bottom line is that I wasn't safe. Marcia Armstrong, MBA wasn't safe. And, in today's corporate environment, NO-ONE is safe. It happens almost every single day. Different customers want different things at the same time, making it tough to keep everyone happy without overloading the team, especially if you're a Customer Service Manager. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Let's normalize the conversation about fees once and for all. For example, when I design and facilitate your 90-minute training presentation it's based on 25+ years of experience along with hours of related market research and time invested in professional certified expertise which allows me to successfully meet your company's unique needs. There are no hidden “anythings” anywhere; my fee is a transparent representation of my work. It wouldn’t be ethical for me to dilute my knowledge or services so why would you want to dilute my fee? Do you dilute your products or services so customers can pay less? Would you want your employer to discount your salary? Do you dilute your performance so your company can save on wages? I am confused so please take a moment to unconfuse me so I can understand 🙄 I know it’s not everyone but for whom the bell tolls here’s the advice: Clients: When entrepreneurs send you their proposal, please agree to pay their honest undiluted fees OR at least give them the option to offer a discount BEFORE you try to just take it. Furthermore, potential collaborations are great ... as long as we get to discuss them first. Long story short, we are your extended business partners but you can push us and watch us walk away; respect us and everyone lives to see another day. Today is my friend's birthday. When people tell you that a LinkedIn connection can evolve into a beautiful friend just believe them. Shelley Halligan, DNP, PMHNP-BC is one of the most amazing people I've ever met. She's resilient, brave, empathetic, caring and just a great human who regularly engages with others to raise awareness and educate us on the challenges and solutions of substance abuse. But one of the most impressive things about her is that she never ever gives up, not even after having a Near Death Experience (NDE). I remember saving these words below from a post she made after her experience: "The past four months have been very trying to say the least. My accident that left me in a wheelchair & a total life change could have put my life in a total tailspin. I made a decision to not allow it but it was my support #tribe that held me to that decision!! Every week I posted an update on my progress, some big wins, other just small steps (literally) forward. I posted the frustration & fear. My tribe was there! Four and half months post fall, after being told I would never walk, bike, run, or dance again. I’m walking! I’m getting on my spin bike 4 or 5 minutes a day. I workout every day to get better and continue to lean on my support team!" I'm going to be honest 👇🏽 I never ever wanted to be a secretary (says the person who became Barbados' Secretary of the Year in 1994 and first runner up in the Caribbean Secretary of the Year competition a year later) 🤪 For starters, what kind of profession revolved around people making and bringing coffee for their bosses all day long? 🤣 Although a thankless job at times that involved juggling a gazillion different tasks and egos simultaneously, being a secretary evolved into me becoming ➡️ a Certified Professional Secretary ➡️ a Group Office Manager ➡️ a Certified Meeting and Event Planner ➡️ a Certified Instructional Designer and Virtual Trainer ➡️ AN ENTREPRENEUR 💃🏽 Over the years I've had good bosses and bad bosses, coordinated company meetings with 500+ people, booked a million hotel rooms, typed a million emails, created another million spreasheets and designed a billion PowerPoint presentations. It wasn't always easy but the organizational, communication, attention to detail, negotiation and diplomacy skills I now have in my personal/professional backpack today are priceless.
