Welcome to the City Portal, the City's biweekly round up of all the latest City news you could ever want and more! This newsletter will be chock full of information about events, development and City services. We will still be covering COVID-19 in the COVID-19 Briefing section at the end of this newsletter.
Downtown Market Plaza
On April 20, City Council approved a development structure agreement, naming LANE4 Development Group as the master developer of the Downtown Market Plaza redevelopment project in downtown Lee’s Summit and Biederman Redevelopment Ventures as the manager. City Council also gave initial approval to a cooperative agreement with the Downtown Lee’s Summit Community Improvement District for the funding of the Farmers Market Pavilion.
In addition to the initial approval of the cooperative agreement, City Council approved a budget amendment allocating approximately $3.5 million from the sale of surplus properties to the Downtown Market Plaza project fund.
Sweep the Summit
A big shout out to the City's Beautification Commission, and students from Lee's Summit and Lee's Summit West High Schools who participated in Sweep the Summit. Over 48 students took part in the annual event and picked up trash throughout Hartman Park Sports Complex and Lowenstein Park. Thank you!
Opportunities for Public Comment
Third Street Corridor Improvements
The City is hosting a public meeting on April 29 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall to receive feedback on the conceptual plans and exhibits for infrastructure improvements to the Third Street Corridor from Blue Parkway to Jefferson Street. The project is designed to enhance safety and improve connectivity, resulting in an inviting gateway into downtown Lee's Summit.
Public comments will also be accepted online April 30 through June 1, 2021.
Capital Improvements Plan
The City is asking for public comment on the 2022-2026 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Improvements to the Lee's Summit Airport is one of the new projects included in the plan.
Public comments close at midnight on May 17 and can be submitted online.
City's Ignite! Comprehensive Plan
The City is posting draft elements of the plan online over the next few weeks. Citizens are asked to review these draft elements and provide their thoughts online.

New Addition to Downtown Sculpture Walk
Meet "Patches," a beautiful steel horse created by Vince Houston of Fulton, Mo. Patches is located at SE Fourth Street and Main.
Houston also created the famous "Raptor" that has been guarding Fire Headquarters. Thanks to a grant from the Downtown Community Improvement District and the Industrial Development Authority, Raptor has been added to the City’s permanent public art collection and now reigns over City Hall Plaza.
All sculptures that are part of the Downtown Sculpture Walk are exhibited on loan to the City for one year and are available for purchase.
City Reminders
Be a Hero on May 3
The City is partnering with the Community Blood Center to host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Gamber Community Center. Extra precautions are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Register today and help those in need.
City Hall History Exhibit
"Show Me Lee's Summit: A Celebration of the Missouri Bicentennial" is a new exhibit on display at City Hall through May 31. Presented by the Historical Society of Lee's Summit, the display highlights 200 years of Lee's Summit area history.
World Elder Abuse Awareness
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) will be recognized on Friday, June 15. The City of Lee’s Summit understands the importance of raising awareness about this significant topic, and ensuring older adults lead happy and healthy lives free from abuse. Take action by participating in the first-ever virtual awareness walk. Walk for #WEAAD is a national elder justice movement.

Utility Worker Trainee
Water Utilities is hiring utility workers! The position offers a high level of on-the-job training, opportunities for career advancement and great benefits!
Audiovisual Technician
The City is looking for a part-time audiovisual technician to work in the evenings. The position facilitates and provides audiovisual technical support for City meetings, including live broadcasts. The salary starts at $16 per hour.
Field Engineering Inspector
Development Services is looking to fill the position of field engineering inspector. This individual would report to the engineering inspections manager and would inspect work related to public and private infrastructure, in particular related to private development and right-of way activities.
