WENTWORTH, N.C. — DWI charges have become the stuff of scandal in Rockingham County these days, according to the Greensboro News & Record.

Keith Mabe, the chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners, was arrested in December and charged with driving while impaired, sparking cries for his resignation.

Similar outrage was expressed after Nancy Bennett, a lieutenant with the Reidsville Police Department who supervised DWI checkpoints, was charged with DWI herself.

These days, Mark Keeney, Rockingham County’s new chief assistant district attorney, is wondering what the fallout will be now that details related to his DWI conviction in 2009 have resurfaced.

Last week, the controversy surrounding another assistant district attorney’s DWI charge in Asheville had Keeney calling the News & Record.

“Should I expect an article about me after what happened in Asheville today?” Keeney asked.

In 2009, Keeney had been Rockingham County’s assistant district attorney, but his DWI arrest cost him his job.
