New This Week: 3 Midsize Bathrooms That Don’t Skimp on Style
Colorful vanities, shiplap walls, interesting tile and classic light fixtures elevate these striking new baths
Midsize bathrooms are great spaces for going big with style. The cost of higher-end tile, for example, stays relatively low when you’re dealing with a space that’s under 100 square feet. The following bathrooms show how designers can pack a lot of style into midsize spaces.
2. Green and White
Designers: Architecture by Kirsten Schoettelkotte of Tindall Architecture Workshop; interior design by Cathleen Seay (one of the homeowners) and Jean Wilson Freeman, her sister
Location: Greenville, South Carolina
Size: 91 square feet (8.4 square meters)
Homeowners’ request: A special, playful shared bathroom for their 16-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son.
Style: Custom green vanity cabinet (painted in Envy by Sherwin-Williams). Custom-upholstered window seat with storage. Basket-weave floor tile. Vintage French enameled coat hooks in white and Kelly green.
Designer secret: “Cathleen and her husband, Britt, didn’t necessarily want to break the bank for the kids’ bathroom, as they knew it would take a beating, so they selected classic permanent fixtures — tile, style of cabinetry, plumbing fixtures — and chose to get really creative when it came to decorating the space,” architect Kirsten Schoettelkotte says.
“Cathleen has a knack for finding deals, blending unique and inexpensive solutions with polished and premium selections. She wanted gold lamps in the reading nook but couldn’t find any for less than $200 each. On a trip to Ikea for closet storage, she lucked out, finding the perfect little lamps for $15 each. The electrician hardwired them in for her.”
Paint by Benjamin Moore: White Dove (walls) and Super White (trim); mirrors: HomeGoods; gold sconces: Ikea; polished nickel sconces: Joss & Main; vanity: custom-made, painted in Envy by Sherwin-Williams; countertop: quartz in Ella, Cambria; faucets: Cassidy, Delta; window seat fabric: Mansure & Co.; tile: white and black matte basket weave, Clayton Tile; shades: natural bamboo, Blinds Chalet

3. Navy and Cream
Designer: Katie DeRario of Hart & Lock Design

Style: Navy shiplap walls (painted in Sea Serpent by Sherwin-Williams). Custom ash wood vanity with quartz countertop. Antique brass fixtures that pop and warm the space. Patterned tile on the floor and shower niche. Flat pebble tile waterfall detail in shower. White porcelain wall tile in shower. Round mirror. Antique ladder for hanging towels.

Designer secret: “Bringing in warm gray and cream in the tiles softened the space and pulled all the textures and colors together,” designer Katie DeRario says.
“Uh-oh” moment: “Using a special finish such as antique brass can be tricky,” DeRario says. “Different vendors have their own version, and pulling together plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, mirror and hardware not to clash can be tricky. The key is not to overdo it, and it may sound cliché but less is more. In the end, we were able to find the perfect pieces to mix together, but it wasn’t without trial and error.”
Floor tile: Atlas, Cement Tile Shop; shower tile: Villa, 3 by 12 inches, Floor & Decor; pebble tile: Floor & Decor; plumbing fixtures: Ferguson, Delta; light fixtures: Circa Lighting; mirror: West Elm; sink: Thompson Traders; side table, artwork and ladder: Hart & Lock Design; hardware: Restoration Hardware

Designer: Stacy Paulson
Location: Austin, Texas
Size: 53 square feet (4.9 square meters)
Homeowners’ request: A functional, unexpected, modern guest bathroom that would keep the 1950s charm of the house.
Style: Blue vanity (painted in Great Falls in semigloss finish by Sherwin-Williams). Vintage pendant chandelier. Two-inch black hex tile flooring. Three-by-6-inch white subway tile walls. White wall paint (Extra White in flat finish by Sherwin-Williams). White quartz countertop. Vessel sink. Semiframeless glass shower. Toilet paper holder shaped like a cat. “I would call this space ‘vintage charm,’” designer Stacy Paulson says.
Designer secret: “The best tip I can offer about what makes this space work is the simple color scheme,” Paulson says. “It is a small space but feels much larger because of all the black and white. Accessories are kept to a minimum. Clean lines [are] everywhere — the sink, mirror, tiles — which makes the cabinet color and pendant light stand out.”
Sink and toilet: Kohler; faucet and shower trim: Delta; countertop: Silestone
