WATCH: New Mexico inmates celebrate Christmas in song

A Christmas music video uploaded by the New Mexico Corrections Department is helping to change some prisoners’ tunes.

Inmates in New Mexico’s 11 prisons created a cover song to the tune of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” highlighting their good works and community service across the state.

Some of the good deeds include wrapping toys for a toy drive, preparing meals for the homeless and helping build homes for Habitat for Humanity.

Gregg Mercantel from the New Mexico Corrections Department told KRQE News that the organization wanted to help the prisoners realize the benefits of giving back and acting selflessly.

“Folks don’t come to prison for doing good deeds,” said Mercantel. “It was pleasantly surprising to see normally macho inmates now willing to sing the community a Christmas song. To me, that told me maybe we’re [making] some progress in terms of changing the lens, the optics of some of these inmates’ hearts.”

The sometimes awkward and mostly out-of-tune song may not be perfect, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction for these inmates.
