The Torchlight series is well-known in the action role-playing game (ARPG) genre. Now, the latest entry, Torchlight 3 has finally arrived in Early Access. It has a steampunk aesthetic and is brighter and more colorful than other ARPGs, such as the Diablo series.

Torchlight 3 comes with four classes: the Sharpshooter, the Railmaster, the Dusk Mage, and perhaps the most unique: the Forged. What makes the Forged so unique? The other classes are all human (although due to the cartoony style of Torchlight, they can only count to eight on their fingers), but the Forged is a robot.

Using the Forged in Torchlight 3

While the other characters obtain pieces of armor as they journey through the world and defeat hordes of enemies, the Forged can upgrade itself with new parts. For example, in the beginning it walks around on spider-legs, but it can obtain treads. The Forged also has unique weapons, such as a chest cannon which can fire a rapid storm of bullets in addition to its melee attacks.

As the Forged is a steam-powered robot, it must worry about building up pressure. The combat attacks the Forged makes generate Heat and is indicated on the Heat charge meter. Build up too much Heat, and attacks will not function until it has cooled down. Therefore, it is important to invest points into one of the Vent skills. Which one the players choose depends on their approach to combat. A melee-oriented build will likely want Vent: Vortex Bomb, which unleashes a blast that will affect all enemies around the player. It can be paired with the combat skill Rapid Strike to unleash a barrage of punches at nearby enemies. For players intending to go with a ranged approach, Vent: Coal Launch is essential. It drops flaming hot coals centered on the cursor, and yes, that can be centered on the player as well. Do not worry, players are not damaged by their own skills.

The Ramming Robot Skill in Torchlight 3

Ramming Robot is a useful skill for both types of builds. Melee builds might start combat with Ramming Robot, getting right in the middle of combat before unleashing devastating attacks at all the enemies around them. Ranged classes still will find use out Ramming Robot but in a different way. Getting surrounded by enemies is not a good position for ranged characters, so Ramming Robot can be used as an escape mechanism to put distance between themselves and the enemy.

The player can obtain a variety of pets throughout the game, and they come with some unique abilities. When selecting skills, it is important to consider what the build is trying to accomplish. For example, ranged characters get good use with Immobilizing Strike, which gives the pet’s attacks a 25% chance to immobilize enemies for 2 seconds.

Torchlight 3 is still in Early Access, which means that a lot can change in the coming months, but this guide serves as a good place to start.  Experimentation is an important part of Torchlight 3. If something is not working, there is the option to reallocate the skill point elsewhere. One final piece of advice: when circles appear on the ground not created by the player, it is best to stand somewhere else.
