Leflore County deputy facing drug charges

GREENWOOD — A deputy with the Leflore County Sheriff's Department has been arrested on federal drug trafficking charges.

Sheriff Ricky Banks tells The Greenwood Commonwealth that Deputy Mark Head was arrested Tuesday. Banks says his office was aware of the FBI's investigation into Head and cooperated with federal authorities.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chad Lamar says Head is charged with one count of attempted distribution of cocaine.

Head was released Tuesday on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Head is being represented by a federal public defender.

According to an FBI affidavit, Head accepted $1,500 from an informant who arranged for Head to pick up one kilogram of fake cocaine at on Dec. 4 at Little Round Lake Park in Leflore County and transport it to the informant.

Banks said Head was fired following his arrest.
