Suspect found in break-in case from June 2013

HILLSDALE — The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office arrested a man from Fremont, Indiana Wednesday in connection with a burglary reported on June 1, 2013 at a Main Street residence in Montgomery.

Jack Eugene Hower, 56, was taken into custody on a felony warrant for breaking and entering a building with intent to commit larceny. After lodging at the Hillsdale County Jail, a bond was set at $150,000 at 10 percent.

“A chainsaw was taken as part of that break-in,” said Sheriff Stan Burchardt. “Subsequent investigations revealed this guy was the suspect. A was warrant issued and he was arrested.”

Hower faces up to 10-years imprisonment if found guilty of the charge.

At arraignment in District Court, Hower asked Judge Donald Sanderson to appoint him a public attorney.

“I’m in the process of fighting for disability,” he said. “My fiance’s the one that works.”

Due to health concerns, Hower’s bond has been reduced to $5,000 at 10 percent.He will be back in District Court for a preliminary examination Dec. 23 at 9 a.m.
