Protecting Your Wood Floors during the Holidays

Protecting Your Wood Floors during the Holidays

Your wood floors need to be well-protected during this time of year just as much as any other.

Now that the holidays are here again, you might be so busy you’re not thinking about your floors. But your wood floors need to be well-protected during this time of year just as much as any other. Here are some worthwhile tips for how to do that in all of the noise, activity, and fun.

Use Door Mats

Depending on how many entrances your home has, you may need to get more door mats during your holiday errands. Door mats provide a handy place for guests to wipe their shoes off before they come inside. The damp ground outside can be tracked inside, and you don’t want moisture from fallen leaves or puddles of mud to get on your beautiful wood floors. Don’t forget to put door mats on the inside of the doors, too.

Use Area Rugs

Next, consider putting area rugs over wider stretches of wood flooring. These rugs, plus runners, can provide a useful foot path from your front door to your kitchen, and from the kitchen to the dining room, especially if both rooms are furnished with hardwood that you want to protect during the busy holiday season.

Take Shoes Off

Have all of your guests and family members take their shoes off before they come inside. Putting an another dark-colored area rug near the front door might be useful in this case, or you can try using plastic mats by the front door to achieve the same purpose.

Clean Often

It can be hard to remember to clean while a holiday party is in progress. But you never know when food or drink will spill. As soon as a spill happens, try to be on the spot to clean it up before anything liquids can seep into the wood floors.

Watch the Tree

One last piece of advice is to keep an eye on the Christmas tree. If you have a live tree, you need to water it so that it doesn’t dry out and become a fire hazard. Consider using a waterproof tree skirt that can collect any water and keep it away from your floors.
