FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale left his final spring training start with two outs in the first inning when a line drive struck him in the hip.

The Red Sox announced he has a left hip contusion and he'll be "evaluated further."

Sale retired George Springer on a flyout to left field to begin the game. He then struck out Jake Marisnick swinging.

Alex Bregman walked and then J.D. Davis lined a single off Sale's hip.

He walked off the mound to the dugout.

Sale is scheduled to start Thursday's regular season opener in Tampa Bay.
