Keep your home sustainable while your away for christmas...

Ensure your home isn’t wasting valuable resources when you’re not there...

Many of us are likely to travel at some point this holiday season. If you've committed to a No Waste Festive Season this year, then here's a few changes to approach the way that you travel, starting right at home.

5 tips to keep 'home sweet home' green during the holidays

  1. Be sure to turn OFF all lights, computer equipment, and electronics.
  2. Turn power strips to OFF and unplug devices from their outlets.
  3. Make sure all of your windows are shut and window treatments are closed including blinds, curtains or drapes.
  4. Combat food waste by giving away all perishable food in your kitchen, or anything that may spoil to neighbours, friends or family.
  5. Keep your plants alive. Find a dependable plant sitter, or follow these other care methods.

Why is it important?

Not only will you be cutting waste and pollution plus saving energy by preparing your house before you go away, but it will save you money too. Here's some stats...

  1. - If a million women halve food waste, we also can avoid wasting $500M a year.
  2. - If a million women cut household electricity by 20%, we can make 2 coal-fired power stations redundant.

What about staying green while you travel?

When you take a holiday, it is a time to refresh, recharge and have a break. If you try to live eco-friendly in your normal day to day life, there is no reason why you can’t keep that happening on your holidays, and still feel like you are getting the relaxing break you deserve.

The number one rule is planning from the beginning for your holiday to be an eco-friendly one. Check out this post for 5 easy ways to stay green when you travel.
