Former Vike, national MVP Hundal returns to assist Vikes men’s soccer team

Jan. 11: Former Vikes men’s soccer stand out Cam Hundal joins coaching staff (Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria celebrated the name Cam Hundal (Terrace, B.C.) on an incredible number of occasions throughout the Vikes men's soccer stand out's career from 2011 to 2016. The five-time Canada West All-Star, 2015 CIS Player of the Year and 2011 CIS championship MVP has returned to Victoria but this time to assist head coach Bruce Wilson on the bench.

"We are so pleased to have Cam return to our team as an assistant coach for the remainder of the year," said head coach Wilson who recruited and coached Hundal through his five-year career. "He will bring that university playing experience that is so valuable to our young players on the team."

Hundal joins current assistant coaches Nico Craveiro and Adam Ravenhill for the remainder of the season that currently includes training four nights a week with games on the weekend against local Division 1 teams like the Wave and Oak Bay.

"Since leaving the Vikes I spent time in Phoenix to play soccer and then came back to Vancouver where I was coaching," said Hundal, who left UVic as the 2015-16 Male Athlete of the Year. "I have a few classes left to complete my degree and time to also help out the Vikes program."

Hundal's experience outside of the Vikes is also extensive having spent time playing with the Under 18 and Under 23 Whitecaps programs, as well as competing in the MLS Reserve League and with the Victoria Highlanders and Phoenix Rising FC.

"Being a Vike for five years gives me a connection to the program but I also really enjoy coaching and it will be nice to do it at the university level," added Hundal. "I think Bruce's experience and dedication really benefits this program. He cares about the players and the overall program in general and so I think that's why UVic has built a good reputation over the years."

At UVic, Hundal made a splash in his rookie season being named the Canada West Rookie of the Year and scoring the game winner for the Vikes to hoist their fifth championship banner at home at Centennial Stadium. Hundal was named the Championship MVP and was also that season's conference Rookie of the Year – the same year Wilson was named Canada West Coach of the Year for the ninth time. Hundal was also the University's Rookie of the Year for 2011-12 and wrapped up his fifth and final year being named CIS Player of the Year as well as a CIS First Team All-Canadian.

"Obviously the team achievements are the most memorable but also just the routine of being a Vike," said Hundal about his favourite memories as a student-athlete. "The staff, team mates and coaches were all great to me during my time here so I am glad I have had the opportunity to meet all these people."
The Vikes men's soccer team will continue their training right through to April with their only non-local competition coming Feb. 7-17, where the team will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. Wilson has lined up training as well as games confirmed with Benedictine University at Mesa and a development team from the Phoenix Rising FHC.

"Cam is a great individual attacking player that can score and set up goals," credited Wilson of the Education major. "He always worked hard and was extremely fit. His vision on the field and first touch are immaculate. He was a captain and leader on the team for his last few seasons and he will be a great addition to our coaching staff."
