The Basics of Proper Fiber Patch Cable Management

Fiber Patch Cable

Proper fiber patch cable management means for a sleek, clean aesthetic, but it also increases efficiency.

If you’ve seen professionally set up fiber optics cables before, you’re likely aware of some of the value that proper cable management can have. It’s certainly a step up in the aesthetics department to have properly managed and organized cables, but there’s an efficiency benefit, too. Even with a professionally set up fiber optic cabling system, you may need to add onto it at some point and that means understanding how to organize an additional fiber patch cable. If you’re concerned about fiber patch cable management, read on to find out some tips for how to keep things clean and efficient.

Understanding Fiber Patch Cable Stressors

Like any cable, fiber optics patch cables have a bend radius that allows the cable to be bent and twisted to fit certain needs. Remember, though, that pulling or stressing cables can ultimately stress a fiber patch cable enough that it could have an impact on performance. If you’ve resorted to pulling a cord and need to put a noticeable amount of strength into it, you’re likely doing something wrong. For optimal performance, be sure to handle your fiber patch cables gently and appropriately.

Bundling and Tying

Keeping cords organized often requires bundling or tying them together.  In the past, installers used zip ties or other cable management ties. While this is an effective way to manage your cable management, it does come with a word of warning: watch for pinching. If cable ties are tightened to the point where individual cords can rotate freely, you’ve tightened them far enough and should avoid going any tighter, as that can ultimately impact performance.  More and more today, Velcro wrap bands are being used instead of zip ties as they can be more easily adjusted, reused and don’t create a “pinch point”.

Labeled Cables

Your data center may experience changes in system administrator personnel that could mean someone ends up looking at a fiber setup that was established by someone no longer around. This is why labeling cables is so crucial, as it allows technicians to come in and upgrade systems without having to do a lot of sleuthing to figure out what everything is for.  This makes moves and changes much easier for the Installer/IT professional.
