Overview of OSC’s CV Scraping service No Images? Click here October 31, 2017 Overview of OSC’s CV Scraping service. Who can use it, and how to do so?Are you a Harvard-affiliated author who would like to distribute legal copies of your work through DASH, Harvard’s open-access repository? Do you have numerous works you want to make available to fellow researchers and the public? Or, do you just find DASH deposit confusing? The Office for Scholarly Communication (OSC) is here to help with our CV Scraping service. What is it? A CV Scrape is a review of your publications with the goal of depositing as many as possible in DASH. You send us a list of your publications, and we determine which works we can deposit in DASH for others to read and download. How does it work? The OSC reviews your publications list and determines which we can distribute through DASH. Where we legally may, we will deposit the work to DASH on your behalf. Sometimes we'll need you to provide us with appropriate versions of the texts. In those cases, we'll contact you with specific requests. This process usually takes around 8-10 weeks. Is there a charge? There is no charge for a CV Scrape. What do I do? To request a CV Scrape, please email the OSC: osc@harvard.edu. A member of the OSC will then confirm your request and start the process. Before we can begin the CV Scrape, the OSC will have you sign the Assistance Authorization (AA). This one-time form takes under a minute to sign and can be done online. The Assistance Authorization does two things: reaffirms the Open Access policy (if you are covered by one) and gives the OSC permission to make DASH-related licensing choices on your behalf. The latter assures copyright compliance in DASH and allows us to request a publisher’s permission to distribute a work in DASH. Once the scrape is completed, OSC will review with you instances where works cannot be posted to DASH or where unique or tricky circumstances exist. What’s the result? Your works will be open access in DASH, providing access to everyone around the world. Works in DASH see millions of downloads per year. Along with increased visibility, citation advantages, and Harvard branding, you will be able to see detailed statistics for your works deposited in DASH (how many times a work has been downloaded and from where). Each work in DASH features a permanent and stable URL link and is strongly indexed in a wide range of search engines, including Google and Google Scholar. Works in DASH are preserved through the Digital Repository Service, Harvard Library’s state-of-the-art preservation system. Each work invites readers to comment or provide feedback - we call these DASH Stories. The OSC receives dozens of Stories per week and most express the author’s gratitude to Harvard and/or the author for making scholarship available or how the downloaded work has made a difference in their research or everyday lives. Many of these stories are moving. We recently received this Story, from a reader in South America: “I am a University lecturer in South America with limited access to academic journals. I wish they all were free to access. I am glad for this initiative, I hope it soon becomes the norm.” The OSC hopes you will take advantage of our CV Scraping service, giving your scholarship greater impact and reach.
