The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service said it was notified about an illness that happened when the person ate ground beef on June 12 that came from Ranch Foods Direct.

There is concern customers might have the meat products in their freezers. The products should not be consumed. Instead, they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

The FSIS continues its investigation along with the Colorado Department of Public Health and the El Paso County Public Health Department.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps one to 10 days after exposure. Most people recover within a week, but some can develop a type of dangerous kidney condition.

This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children younger than 5 years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor and decreased urine output. People who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
