This is what you will need:
- An old wooden fence which you don't mind experimenting with. You could also use a wall that's in need of a bit of decoration.
- Drill
- Paper
- Black and white paint
- A little bit of moss
- A pair of artificial deer head mounts (There's no limits when it comes to taste in December, so feel free to make it as natural or as tacky as you like)
- Staghorn fern, tillandsia and related plants with antler-like leaves
- Screws, metal wire.
- Optional: a stirrup cup (A drink served prior to a hunt to give hunters courage)
How to make your alternative deer head
- Draw a random shape (see image) on paper folded in half, cut it out, fold it out and copy the shape onto the wood.
- Paint the shapes black.
- Screw the tillandsia directly onto the wood: these plants take their food directly via their aerial roots, out of the air, which is really handy!
- Take the staghorn ferns out of their pots, wrap the root ball in moss and bind it with metal wire.
- Drill two holes into the wood, fit the root ball through the holes with the metal wire.
- Hang up the deer head mounts.
- Draw a frame around all the mounts with a spirit level, paint this roughly with the white paint and mark the inside of the frame with the tape. You could also create your own frame design.
- Spray the root ball of the staghorn fern regularly with a plant spray to keep it moist. The tillandsia will benefit from being sprayed all over.
