Oh, Canada is coming to Calgary.
The largest exhibit of Canadian art ever assembled outside of Canada arrives at a quartet of Calgary venues January 31 and runs through April 26 at the Glenbow Museum, Esker Foundation, Illingworth-Kerr Gallery (at ACAD) and Nickle Galleries (University of Calgary).
The exhibition is the work of American curator Denise Markonish, who spent three years touring various Canadian galleries to select the massive show, which debuted at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in 2012.
“I found myself in an art world that knew more about artists in China than in Canada,” she says. “What started out as a quest to find art has turned into an exploration of a whole country.”
In addition to the exhibition, the Calgary arts community will present a three-month long festival of Canadian artists at venues and cultural spaces across the city.
