Atlassian customers2014 has been a banner year for Atlassian. We introduced Jira Portfolio and Atlassian Enterprise, held our biggest and brightest Summit yet, and opened new offices in Manila and Austin, Texas. There’s another milestone that hasn’t been talked about as much as these others, but is incredibly meaningful for all Atlassians, especially Mike and myself: we now have more than 40,000 organizations as customers.

Small company, big goals

Back when we had less than 500 customers, Mike and I wondered what it would be like to someday have more than 50,000 Atlassian customers. That kind of number was almost unheard of in the enterprise software world. Still, you seldom do big things if you don’t set big goals. So set that goal we did.

Fast-forward to 2014, and here we are: just over 40,000 businesses and non-profits use Atlassian tools. 80% of the way to our incredibly audacious, wild, hairy goal! It’s taken us 12 years to get this far. That’s six times as long as Pets.com even existed, so an aeon in software years (possibly due to our habit of investing in our products instead of Super Bowl ads… but I digress).
Customer count by year
Along the way we’ve helped millions of people at tens of thousands of organizations build better software, work smarter, and revolutionize their industries–and indeed the world. Twitter’s ground-breaking communications platform, Tesla’s electric cars, and NASA’s Mars rover all come to mind. Part of what’s so special about making collaboration and development tools is that we get to live vicariously through our customers’ achievements. Our success is a reflection of your success.

Celebrating in style

If you’ve been a customer for long, you know that a success of any kind can mean only one thing for us: t-shirts. We wanted to celebrate this moment with our staff in true Atlassian style, and so t-shirts it was!

Mike and Jay also sat down to share some thoughts on what 40,000 customers means for us.

As you can see, the entire staff is pretty excited about this milestone. The trust that you have placed in us and our products is at once gratifying, humbling, and inspiring. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

The Atlassian customer base is growing faster than ever, thanks in a large part to Hipchat. It’s free (not just free trial–free), so I encourage you check it out and see if it changes the way you work as much as it has changed ours.

Here’s to our continued success together,

– Scott
