Opening Of New Campground At New River Gorge National River Pushed Back To Next Year

Delays mean the Meadow Creek Campground at New River Gorge National River won't open for business until next year/NPS

Unexpected construction delays have led the staff at New River Gorge National River in West Virginia to push back the opening of the Meadow Creek Campground until next year.

The campground, located on the banks of the New River about two miles downstream from the Sandstone Visitor Center, was to have opened this fall. But weather conditions last spring interrupted the construction of the campground. 

When the campground first opens, one large group campsite and more than 20 individual campsites will be available, including sites for tent, car, and RV camping. A second phase of development will complete the campground, adding drive-in sites and walk-in tent sites. Amenities will include communal water spigots, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, a camp host, an amphitheater for park interpretive programs and a public boat launch.

By the end of this fall's construction season, restrooms will be near completion, and most campsites will be installed but in need of finishing work.

When the campground opens, visitors can expect to pay the following fee rates for campsites:

* Walk-in tent only site with no electricity, $10 per night

* Walk-in tent only site with electricity, $18 per night

* Drive-in, car site with electricity, $24 per night

* Drive-in, RV site with electricity and water, $28 per night

has anyone been to this new campground . I have driven by and as of yet ir does not appear to be open. July 5th 2016
