Finally, the night out we never knew we’d been waiting for is coming to Manchester - AXE THROWING.
Essentially darts on steroids, the game is already a huge craze in Canada and was brought to London this summer by Jools Whitehorn and John Nimmons, aka Whistle Punks.
Now they’re set to open a second club at the Great Northern Warehouse next February, where players can release any pent-up angst by hurling giant metal hatchets at wooden target boards.
What could possibly go wrong?
“Sinking an axe into a target is the sort of satisfying primal experience that’s hard to find in everyday city life,” said John.
“There’s something brilliantly addictive about it. People come in just to give it a go, and before long they’re trying trick shots and getting competitive with their scores.”
Games will take place across four lanes, each with two targets, with points awarded by how close to the bullseye players can plant their axe.
Players are given a full safety briefing and throwing lesson before being unleashed into tournaments, with the top scorers crowned as axe king or queen at the end.
A competitive league may even be set up once the club is settled in to its new home.
“The great thing about urban axe throwing is that it’s all about technique,” said Jools.
“Being able to throw the axe harder than anyone else isn’t much of an advantage, so everyone starts out on a level playing field and women and men can compete against each other.”
“We’re so excited to be opening our second branch of Whistle Punks. After a great reception in London, we’re thrilled to be bringing it to the buzzing heart of Manchester.”
Whistle Punks Manchester is set to open on February 1, with opening hours from 5.45pm to 9pm, Tuesday to Friday, and 11am to 6.30pm on Saturdays.
Sessions will be priced between £22 and £25 per person, with a 20 per cent earlybird discount on all bookings made before midnight on Sunday January 8 at whistlepunks.com .
