Rochester Community Schools will begin its search for a new superintendent after the departure of Robert Shaner earlier this month.

Superintendent Shaner resigned from his position, according to Michelle Bueltel, Board of Education president.

His resignation became effective immediately, according to an Aug 2 email from the district.

“I understand that this transition may evoke questions and concerns within our community,” Bueltel said in the email. “We have a wonderful team of administrators that will ensure continuity and stability. As the board of education begins to discuss the next steps in this transition, we will keep the community informed.”

Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Debi Fragomeni has served as the acting superintendent for the Rochester schools since March 2023 after Shaner announced he was taking a leave of absence. No explanation was given for his absence or how long it would be until his return.

The board of education is holding a workshop at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14 to learn more about the process for selecting a new district superintendent. The presentation, held at Hart Middle School’s media center on Sheldon Road, will be provided by a professional from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and is open to the public.

Shaner had served as the district’s superintendent since 2013.

“His contributions will be remembered and appreciated for years to come,” Bueltel said in the email. “I am grateful for Dr. Shaner’s service and wish him the best.”

Classes in the district are set to begin on Aug. 28.
