League Inc., a Toronto-based mobile health startup focused on wellness, has raised $4 million in seed funding to support its official launch in early 2015.

The first round of investment was led by OMERS Ventures, Foundation Capital, Real Ventures and Infinite Potential Group, the company said in an announcement. The company aims to empower consumers, with a focus on preventive health and wellness by way of a “data-rich mobile platform.”

Users can use the app to then create a “league of their own” — a team of health professionals that work together to deliver personalized programs, the company said. The idea is to make it easy for users to discover, schedule and pay for services, and to store health data from wearables and health apps so that users can maintain control of their data. The startup is hoping to ride the recent wave of consumerism in healthcare.

“The future of health is preventative, and it’s about the consumer,” said Michael Serbinis, CEO and founder of League, in a statement. The company was incubated through the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, which was established in 2000 to commercialize publicly funded medical research, though it evolved to include IT, social innovation and engineering.
