This week, Camera at the Ringside was at last Tuesday’s general cattle sale at Enniscorthy Mart.

Good-quality store bullocks from 500kg to 600kg were a strong trade and sold mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.10/kg. Better-quality U grade types made from €2.15/kg to €2.25/kg. Mart manager Tommy Harrington said that lesser-quality cattle remain slower to sell.

Lighter store bullocks from 400kg to 500kg were a steady trade and made from €1.90/kg to €2.10/kg, with the top third in terms of quality making from €2.25/kg to €2.35/kg.

Light Friesian bullocks remain a difficult sell, but types ready for finishing over 500kg were a solid trade. Heifers were firm also, with heifers from 500kg to 600kg selling mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.15/kg. Better-quality types made from €2.20/kg to €2.35/kg. Lighter heifers made from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for average quality lots, while better-quality types made over €2.30/kg.

Heavy continental cull cows were a firm trade and made from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg. Friesian types made from €1.20/kg to €1.40/kg for feeding types. Commission rates are €9 to the buyers and 1.25% to the seller.
