The now Independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Westmoreland, George Wright, made a brief appearance in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon.

Wright, who resigned from the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) last Friday, still had 13 days left on his leave of absence from the House.

He sat briefly on the Opposition benches just before the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, rose to make her contribution to the Sectoral Debate.

Wright is believed to be the man who was caught on a video recording that was widely circulated in April, raining blows on a woman with both his fists and a stool.

Neither Wright nor the battered woman, Tannisha Singh, who is said to be Wright’s common-law wife, gave a formal statement to the police, forcing them to end a probe into the matter. Singh, notably, had to seek medical attention for the injuries she sustained.

Although he has neither confirmed nor denied that he is the man on the low-quality video, Wright was immediately dropped from the JLP’s parliamentary caucus amid widespread calls for him to resign, from civil society groups, individuals and the parliamentary Opposition.

The first-term MP was one of many newcomers swept into Gordon House on the wave of the massive landslide victory by the JLP in the September 3, 2020 General Elections.

He took a two-month leave of absence from the House that was due to expire on June 21.
