College of Staten Island junior forward Will Fonseca had his way in the paint Tuesday night with 36 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots and four steals during a 81-66 victory over visiting Hunter in a CUNY Conference opener.

"We did a good job getting into the depth of the zone and I was able to get some early reads and then some easy baskets in transition," said Fonesca. "We played together pretty well at both ends of the court."

CSI (2-2 overall) took a 33-28 halftime lead and built a comfortable edge early in the second half. The Dolphins shot 51.7 percent from the floor, won the rebounding battle 38-28, and blocked 10 shots.

Fonseca was at the forefront of the impressive home opener, sinking 11 of 17 shots from the floor and 14 of 19 free throws. Sophomore point guard Frankie Schettino added 12 points, 13 assists and four steals to the winning attack, while guards Edin Bracic and Khari Rollock both made 5-of-7 shots while combining for 21 points and 11 rebounds.

A supportive crowd filled one side of the bleachers and seemed to give the Dolphins a lift.

"It was a good turnout and we really appreciate the support," said Fonseca.

CSI went 28-3 last season, putting together a 24-game winning streak. A handful of key players have moved on, leaving Fonseca and Schettino to lead the way.

"We might not be as talented overall as last year, but we have a lot of young kids who are eager to learn," said Fonseca. "They have heart and are willing to fight to the end."

Brian Kruger paced Hunter (3-3 overall) with 14 points while Robert Borusiewicz added 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

But this night belonged to the Dolphins.

NOTES: CSI hosts Montclair State in a 1 p.m. game on Saturday and Baruch visits on Dec. 9.
