LOWELL — The 25-year-old man who fell off an apartment complex and died early Sunday morning was a resident of the building who accessed the roof by climbing through his kitchen window and up a fire escape, according to police.
The man was identified at David Kendricken, 25, of Lowell, formerly from Melrose, Lowell police Captain Tim Crowley said.
“It appears to be a tragic accident,” he said.
Police have not yet determined whether alcohol was involved in the fall, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday at 141 John St., part of the Apartments at Boott Mills complex.
The apartments are housed in a renovated brick mill building. Some rooms above the ground floor have access to the roof via metal fire escapes.
On Sunday, a small section of the parking lot about 15 feet away from the side of the building was covered in sawdust, apparently to cover the spot where the man fell. By Monday morning, the parking lot was clear and several residents walked by with their heads hunched against the rain.
Crowley said he was not aware of any changes being made to the building’s fire escapes, which residents are not supposed to use. The managers of the apartment complex could not be immediately reached.
