Snowstorm Wednesday may hamper Thanksgiving travel plans

A Wednesday snowstorm may threaten Thanksgiving travel plans, Accuweather.com reports (Accuweather)

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Enjoy the sun and mild temperatures while you can because a midweek snowstorm may follow.

Forecasters are calling for a cold, wet Wednesday with a mix of rain and between 2 and 4 inches of snow that could spell trouble for pre-Thanksgiving travelers.

Temperatures will get as high as 69 on Monday - challenging the record of 73 degrees, set in 1979 -- and drop, but remain mild through Tuesday before dipping again Wednesday, according to Accuweather.com.

The best case scenario for holiday travelers, Accuweather says, would be if the pending storm only grazed the coast with some rain.

"A stronger storm and one that tracks closer to or hugs the coast," the weather site reports, "would expand the heavy rain and bring a swath of disruptive snow."

The National Weather Service, which has issued a hazardous weather advisory, reports that rain will start early Wednesday morning and continue through the day and into the night, turning to snow as temperatures drop down to the low 30s. Snow will persist overnight Wednesday and possibly into Thanksgiving morning, but should give way by mid-morning.

The likelihood of a significant snowfall on Wednesday remains uncertain because the exact track and strength of the storm is still to be determined, the NWS reports.

There is, however, "the potential for this storm to have some impact on the latter portion of any travel being done leading into Thanksgiving," according to the NWS' hazardous weather statement.

Forecasters expect a dry, sunny Turkey Day with a high in the low 40s.
