They entered the field at LaValle Stadium, hands together, carrying the No. 54 jersey of their fallen teammate.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats, with the memory of Tom Cutinella on the minds of everyone inside the stadium, then went out and delivered a performance for the ages in the Division IV county championship game.

Quarterback Danny Hughes rushed for a career-high six touchdowns and the Wildcats routed No. 2 John Glenn, 47-10, to win the first county championship in program history.

Hughes rushed for 299 yards as the Wildcats outscored the Knights 40-3 after the game was tied 7-7 in the first quarter.

Shoreham advances to play in the Class IV Long Island Championship Nov. 30 back at Stony Brook University.

Junior Daniel Mahoney connected on a pair of field goals for the only other points for Shoreham aside from Hughes’ touchdowns.
