Dongzhi, or Winter Solstice Festival, falls on 21st December 2014, the day on which Northern China experiences the shortest daytime and longest night.
On this night families traditionally gather together for a feast with a centrepiece main course of a whole fish for everyone to share and Tāngyuán - glutinuous rice balls in a sweet soup - for dessert, as it symbolises reunion.
