The 'Coffee Copter': A quad copter programmed to serve coffee on different floors within the A Lab building on demand.
Through an integrated app consumers from within A Lab can order the coffee at the A lab coffee corner ‘The Coffee Virus’ where it is prepared fresh and delivered to the offices in the building by the Coffee Copter. This way, coffee ladies are no longer needed and ordering from a distance during work and meetings is made possible.
How does it work?
The ‘Coffee Copter’ works through an app on a smartphone that anybody can easily download. Trough the app everyone can order a coffee from behind their desks: an ‘Americano’, ‘Espresso’, ‘Cappuccino’ or ‘Latte’. With every order the app sends a signal to the coffee bar on the first floor, so the coffee corner employees can prepare the coffee and fix the cup to the Coffee Copter. The copter works with a stabiliser to keep the coffee as straight as possible during the flight. It uses object recognition and movement detection to avoid people and objects. The drone is programmed with a 3D algorithm to fly routes through the building. The Coffee Copter will land at the delivery address at the especially designed landing pillar and signal that the coffee is ready to drink.
The ‘Coffee Copter’ project
The Coffee Copter is the result of a collaboration between several disciplines within A Lab. A Lab wants to promote crossovers between different disciplines and this project is a good example. The creatives from Instability We Trust made the design, internet bureau Unc Inc took care of the branding, the development of the app, 3D-mapping and the routing through the building and video agency Screenturner put the concept together in a film. The actual Coffee Copter, cup holder and drone hardware was developed by Puurontwerp & Skeyework. The Coffee Virus was responsible for the customer experience and presentation of the coffee. The collaboration resulted from the passion for and constant drive to innovate. The newest discoveries and innovations materialise by constantly working together with less obvious disciplines, which lead to practical use.
Future
The Coffee Copter has flown its first test flight and proved that it is possible to serve coffee with a drone at an office desk in the near future. At present the drone is being further developed for the commercial market. The project is now seeking investors to actually develop the Coffee Copter further.
