March 1
Fine. All went to Church in morning. Read in afternoon. Studio in evening.
March 2 I together with Downes, Charlie Ferry, Morrison & Williams left Aramoho in motor canoe about mid-day for up river. Everything went smoothly & had most enjoyable run. Camped at Ahuahu for the night in a where belonging to Burnell. Spent fairly good night.
March 3 (Tues). Fine most of the day, continued up river. Water very low so we had considerable trouble at the rapids, notably Matahiwi where Downes & I had to get into the water with a long rope to assist the boat. We lost control of it once & the boat was carried right back. After a big struggle in which I lost considerable skin we negotiated the rapid & had dinner at Galatea where we got peaches & pears from the Maoris who were very hospitable. Showers in afternoon but we pushed on to Runana (London) which we reached about 5 o'clock in heavy rain. We camped for the night in Mr Gregor McGregor's new woolshed where we made ourselves-very comfortable.
March 4 (Wed). Fine. Left Runana about 9 & immediately entered Motoa rapid where we had a big struggle to get the boat up. Williams (Napoleon) & I were on the rope & we got very wet. Called at Jerusalem where there were some very fine Maoris. Just afterwards we investigated an ancient cave or burial ground of the Maoris which was situated about 35 feet up a cliff. After making a ladder out of canoe poles about 25 feet long, I managed to get into the hole after scaling the last 10 feet by the aid of shrubs. I dragged a rope up after me & then Downes came up. We found plenty of remains of skeletons & coffins. Cave very small & insecure so did not stay long. Downes descended first & by the aid of the rope which we fastened to a tree below, I followed & after a precarious trip, managed to reach the ground, after having cut the rope as high as possible. We brought away a well preserved skull which I brought home. We reached Pipiriki about dark & pitched the tent. Mrs Howard of Pipiriki House who is Charley Ferry's sister, kindly lent us some mattresses & so we had a comfortable night. Downes' muttonstew devoured by dog during night.
March 5 (Thurs). Fine. Before breakfast, Downes, Charley & I climbed high hill in search of ravine used by Maoris as burial ground for the warriors killed in battle. This ravine reckoned to be 1200 ft deep, but we failed to locate it, although we must have been close to it. It is now very overgrown with scrub & hard to find & so is rather dangerous. As the river was too low for us to go any further up river in the launch we got the loan of a dinghy from Mrs Howard & went on in that. Had to tow the boat over Paparoa Rapid which is very swift. After that it was fairly easy going. Charley rowed. We reached the caves about 12 & had a good look at them & it was well worth the trouble. Frank, "Napoleon" & Downes took several photos of the'', also of famous "drop scene" which is close by. Returned to Pipiriki without mishap although there were some exciting times going down the rapids, notably Paparoa which Charley & Downes negotiated alone. We all treated ourselves to a shave which we were much in need of.
March 6 (Frid). Fine. Hung about until nearly mid-day before leaving. Had to effect some repairs to the canoe. Stayed at Runana again in the woolshed - very comfortable.
March 7 (Sat). Fine. Frank took several photos on Mr McGregor's run - sawmill, woolshed, yards etc. Left about 11 o'clock leaving Morrison here. Had an exciting time when the canoe got foul of a rock & we had a great job to get her off. I had to strip off & get into the water & help by pulling on the rope. Fortunately there was no damage done. Reached Ahuahu about dusk without further incident.
March 8 (Sunday). Fine & a really beautiful day. A good "run" down river. Dinner at Parakino where we landed to see a footprint of a Maori woman on a rock who, according to legend jumped off the rock over a gorge to es.cape from her husband. We climbed a high hill to see this & there was a faint resemblance to a foot on the rock. We picked up two passengers here - Frank Gibson (cousin of Vernie & Tui Gibson of Kai Koura) 7- Ryan, a young giant married to a Maori woman. We landed them down river & on each occasion of restarting we had considerable trouble to get the engine to go - the second occasion taking about 1½ hours. We had tea about 6 o'clock where there was a tremendous amount of fruit - guiness & apples of which we brought away a big quantity. On account of the delays in restarting the engine we did not reach Wanganui until about 10 o'clock & as we had to get the boat unloaded & snug, besides having supper & a walk of 2 miles. Frank & I reached Dune Hill about 12.30am. very dirty & tired. Thus ended one of the most enjoyable trips I ever had.
