The EFF is suing the US Government over onerous copyright provisions of copyright law that violate the First Amendment.

This is an interesting one, and I wonder how far this will get. It may go all the way!

Ostensibly enacted to fight music and movie piracy, Section 1201 has long served to restrict people’s ability to access, use, and even speak out about copyrighted materials—including the software that is increasingly embedded in everyday things. The law imposes a legal cloud over our rights to tinker with or repair the devices we own, to convert videos so that they can play on multiple platforms, remix a video, or conduct independent security research that would reveal dangerous security flaws in our computers, cars, and medical devices. It criminalizes the creation of tools to let people access and use those materials.EFF Sues US Government over Copyright Law [eff.org]

High time - for too long corporations have taken over our lives & liberties, under all sorts of pretensions & pretexts, lobbying government and pushing legislation, for mere financial gain of the very few. Enough!

The law requires a three year review of possible exemptions of the law for the purpose of fair use of work and technical progress. Where the problem lies is not in the law, but in the body which is relied upon to make those recommendations to the Library of Congress, in this case, the "Register of Copyrights, who also consults with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (“NTIA”) of the Department of Commerce." (quoted from the Sixth Triennial Proceeding to Determine Exemptions to the Prohibition on Circumvention )

Nothing can gum up the works like one agency/bureaucracy talking to another. (sigh)

Exceptions have been made, just not that frequent, or that "liberating" to the masses who would (truth be told) steal ya blind in a flash!
