18 chains that don't open on Thanksgiving Day

The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Southwest Alabama Labor Council posted an article to their Facebook page on Monday that lists 18 chain stores that refuse to open on Thanksgiving Day.

The article, by Labor 411, states that stores that are open on Thanksgiving Day deprive employees of time with their families.

Donald Adams, business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Mobile and Southwest Alabama Labor Council executive board member said labor unions believe employees should have a choice.

"We at the labor union think people should have more of a say so in their destiny," Adams said.

He said from a labor standpoint most individuals who work on Thanksgiving don't have a choice. Adams said on the other side, management looks at it as a dollar sign.

"I think since I was a child a lot of retail businesses are opening on holidays they didn't normally open on in order to reap the benefit of people buying on the holidays," Adams said.
