Wetland Restoration

Saturday, November 15, 2014
8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Grange Insurance Audubon Center
505 W. Whittier Street, Columbus, OH
To reverse the trend of centuries of wetland loss in Ohio, wetlands across the state need to be restored. Although most of our wetlands have been drained and filled, their potential for restoration is very high. Original hydrology can be reinstated, allowing natural functions to resume. Soils often harbor historic seed banks that restore the native flora that once occupied the site. Still, careful design, monitoring and management are needed. Once completed, the array of vital wetland functions will return, benefiting the local community, watershed and the region. Restoration of these complex ecosystems is important for the health and future of Ohio’s waters.

The Ohio Wetlands Summit on November 15 – 16th will address a variety of topics on wetland restoration. We will examine restoration projects in Franklin, Licking and Guernsey Counties. We will look into site selection for restoration projects and how to find technical and financial resources. On the second day, we will gather at two different restoration sites to consider the specific challenges they pose and the continuing management plans.
