Windows 10's next update will FINALLY solve one of its most annoying quirks, here's how

Windows 10 Creators Update will bring new granular controls to a number of features on your computer.

The next-generation update could also solve one of the operating system's most annoying quirks.

One of the biggest gripes with Windows 10 is the lack of control over update timing.

Users can leave their device on stand-by, only to open it a few hours later to try and get some work done – and find it churning through a new update.

It can be a minor inconvenience with the monthly security updates, which take a few minutes to install.

But when Microsoft pushes out a major software upgrade, like the blockbuster update that tends to drop bi-annually, and the PC  kicks off its installation without warning –  it can render the device unusable for an hour or more.

Microsoft has been working to address these issues for a while now.

In its previous two feature updates, Windows 10 included the option to defer the installation of updates or pause them temporarily.

However these settings were mainly targeted towards enterprise admins.

Thankfully, the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update – scheduled for release in April – will dramatically expand those options.

Following the update, Microsoft will surface a prominent pop-up notification when updates are available.

If you choose the new Pick A Time option, you are then able to choose the date and time when the update will be installed.

Microsoft CVP of Windows and Devices Group Core Quality, Michael Fortin said: "As always, we believe in the value of keeping devices 'up to date,' and recommend that you choose the installation defaults that Windows 10 provides so you will always have the latest features, apps, and security updates. 

"However, when you need more control over the update experience, you will have new choices.

"If you decide to exercise more control over the update process, we’ve added a new icon to the Windows Update Settings page that makes it easier to verify that your device is up to date.

"This 'at a glance' feature is consistent with a similar feature in the new Windows Defender Security Centre.

"In keeping with our approach of iterating based on your feedback, this enhanced update experience has been available to our Windows Insiders for some time and the response has been positive.

"We look forward to rolling this out more broadly with the Creators Update."

The news comes as Microsoft unveiled a new makeover for smart voice assistant Cortana due for release alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Microsoft changed the colour of Cortana on the task bar several software builds ago, but following feedback from users, this will now be reverting to its original greyish hue.

The new Windows 10 build also comes with improvements to Windows Defender.

Microsoft’s one-stop security hub now has a spot in the pop-up notification task bar which will display the current protection status at a glance.

The Security centre can now also be quickly launched with a click of this icon, and can also be accessed via notifications from Windows Defender Antivirus. 

Microsoft has also improved its  “Pick up where you left off” feature in the new update.

Going forward, Windows 10 will now shows any files, websites or apps you’ve been using in Microsoft Edge using Cortana, rather than the Action Centre. 

This means that your previous files are always quickly accessible, and you don't need to worry about accidentally deleting the Action Centre notification.

The news comes as anticipation also builds for the next major Windows 10 upgrade following Creators Update.

Codenamed Redstone 3, the update is set for launch sometime later this year, and will mark Microsoft’s next significant upgrade to its software.

Redstone 3 is expected to bring a number of much-needed updates for Windows 10 as Microsoft looks to get its software on as many devices as possible.

This includes an all-new design for Windows 10, with the update bringing a fresh look for the software.

Codenamed ‘Project Neon’, the new-look Windows 10 appears to bring in a number of stylistic improvements, including boosted animations and blue to apps. 

Microsoft has already made the new tools available to developers, as part of its aims to help teams build new and ‘beautiful apps’.

Project Neon is also set to bring a number of improvements to Windows 10’s 3D functions, and the link between the software and its HoloLens headset.
