As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowMore than 13 million Indiana birth certificates, death certificates and marriage records will be digitized in an agreement between state officials and the genealogy website Ancestry.com.
The contract with the Indiana Commission on Public Records covers birth and death certificates dating back to the early 1900s and state marriage records from 1958 through 2005.
State officials say digitized versions of those records older than 75 years will start becoming available online starting next year, with completion expected by 2016.
The governor's office says the work would've cost the state at least $3.2 million and more than a decade to complete on its own. Ancestry.com will have three years to recoup its costs before the online records will be available for free through the state archives.
