Push the Buzz Button Without Social Media

Before the onslaught … before the proliferation of social sites … conversations were limited to direct interactions between people. Often the chatter took place in live situations, with telephonic communications capturing the remainder.

For brand marketers, that typically meant concocting a pitch to get decision makers thinking and eventually talking about a particular product or service. Once the initial buzz flowed, further conversations often followed. With luck on your side, the conversations led to conversions. Bingo!

Then as now, decision makers had plenty on their plate. Therefore, pitches generally had to be invitingly succinct.

Fortunately, brand marketers still can and do start conversations outside the realm of social media. But the pitch no is longer the preferred trigger. What’s taken its place in many circles is the calculated phrase. As with the pitch, the purpose of these neatly-packed words is to get people talking. Unlike the pitch, however, selling is de-emphasized and usually absent all together. The focus here is on stimulating and building major buzz with thought-provoking wit.

Brand marketers have options – they can create the conversation starters, borrow witticisms from the world’s knowledge bank, or use a combination of the two. If the source is ancient enough, you can even take credit for the phrase. Who’s to know? The main thing is to use something that sets the stage for your product or service.

These conversations, of course, can blossom anywhere. The hallway, office, auditorium, and yes, even online. Why rule anything out, right? The point is to plant the seed with the right phrase or phrases. If the verbiage strikes a responsive chord in your recipients, the rest should take care of itself.
