Hillsborough families in pain endure long wait for justice

At the Hillsborough inquest on Tuesday, Timothy Mitchell, a police constable in 1989, traced the moment that he arrived behind the west stand near Leppings Lane.

He had been summoned to the emergency from street patrol in Rotherham. Half a dozen bodies lay around with clothes wrapped around their heads, which Mitchell took as evidence that they were dead. He was ordered to carry one out of the ground.

Mitchell talked of four officers grabbing a man’s body by the limbs. Asked if he carried an arm or leg, he could not recall. Asked where he took the body, he could not remember.
