On Friday, Canadians gathered at the National War Memorial to honour Canada’s most recent fallen soldier: Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.

A gunman, identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, shot and killed Cirillo on Wednesday while the soldier was posted at the Cenotaph.

Following the shooting, the site was considered an active crime scene and closed to the public.

After the yellow police tape came down Thursday night, crowds gathered Friday at the memorial to pay tribute to Cirillo and lay hundreds of flowers around the memorial's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined the mourners in an afternoon ceremony with the Ceremonial Guard.

As the crowds gathered at the site where Cirillo was shot, a motorcade escorting his body left Ottawa. The transport's route will take the body along the Highway of Heroes on its way to Hamilton, where funeral services will later held.
