The human spine is an incredible part of the body. Not only does it keep us upright, but it is part of our neurological system, nervous system, and so much more. There are many different ways in which the spine can become compromised, resulting in a great deal of pain and discomfort for the individual. Being told by your physician that you have a spinal disorder will naturally bring up feelings of uncertainty and even fear. That being said, there are numerous modalities out there today that can help with a wide range of spinal disorders, including aquatics and physical therapy. In order to figure out which type of therapy is best for your specific ailment, we recommend meeting with one of our knowledgeable team members. We will be able to assess your condition and help you come up with a treatment plan that will best fits your needs and help you get back to feeling healthy.

As with most other types of pain, spinal injuries can be debilitating and wreak havoc on your overall health and happiness. Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is perhaps one of the most devastating and life-changing orthopedic injuries. Because of this, rehabilitation plays an absolutely integral role in preventing secondary complications, maximizing physical function, and reintegrating the person into their community. SCI is not the only serious spinal injury that physical and aquatics therapy can help with.

Here is a look at a handful of other common spine injuries:

  • Adult degenerative scoliosis
  • Cervical degenerative disc disease
  • Whiplash
  • Cervical stenosis
  • Bulging disc
  • Low back strains and sprains
  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar stenosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Neck strain
  • Neck sprain

This list is far from exhaustive, but it should give you a better idea of what some of the most common spinal injuries are. Many people do not realize that the neck and low back are a part of the spine, they think of the spine as more of the middle area of the back. The spine is critical to an individual’s overall health and wellness, which is why it is important you tackle any spine issues before they get worse.

Acute Spinal Pain vs. Chronic Spinal Pain

As we discussed earlier this month when talking about physical therapy for low back pain, there is a big difference between acute and chronic pain that needs to be addressed. Acute pain is quite different from chronic pain, in that it affects the soft tissue and is an immediate pain that goes away soon. On the other hand, chronic pain is represented by a constant low level of stimulation to the nervous system that eventually turns into a persistent pattern. Chronic pain can range from a dull ache that is always present to a more sharp, hot pain. When it comes to the spine, both types of pain are possible.
