Investigation Finds New Mexico Nursing Homes are Some of Nation’s Worst

New Mexico nursing homes have serious deficiencies that put them among some of the worst nursing facilities in the nation, according to a detailed analysis by ProPublica, an investigative journalism organization.

ProPublica’s analysis revealed that 36 of 74 Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the state reported serious deficiencies between 2015 and April 2018. During this period, New Mexico nursing homes were fined a total of $2.42 million. These facilities also had their Medicare and Medicaid payments suspended for infractions a combined total of 44 times.  

In recent years, more than 2,217 infractions at New Mexico nursing homes have been reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which governs nursing homes that receive federal funding. These infractions include nursing home abuse, improper precautions for fire safety and failing to provide adequate notice about switching roommates.

Four Frequently Penalized Nursing Homes

While the ProPublica report revealed that there were deficiencies at many New Mexico nursing homes, there were a few facilities that had a lot more deficiencies than the others, including:

• Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Center – This nursing home is located in Alamogordo, New Mexico and has had a total of 67 deficiencies since 2015, including nine serious deficiencies.
• Casa Real – This Santa Fe, New Mexico facility was found to have 101 total deficiencies since 2015, with five serious deficiencies. According to a 2016 report, eight residents were not given insulin on the doctor-ordered schedule. This nursing home has been fined a total of $122,867 since 2015 and had payments from Medicare or Medicaid suspended three times. Casa Real is also part of the Special Focus Facility initiative.
• Good Samaritan Society – This Albuquerque, New Mexico facility has been hit with $220,214 in fines and had federal payments suspended twice since 2015.
• Mission Arch Center – This facility is located in Roswell, New Mexico and has been cited for seven serious deficiencies and fined a total of $177,077.
