The daughter of Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman announced on her Facebook account over the weekend that she is afflicted with epilepsy.
Michal Liberman-Galon posted a photograph of herself lying in a hospital bed alongside a lengthy post in which she describes her condition in detail.
“Let’s talk about epilepsy,” she wrote. “My epilepsy.”
“On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, as I was leisurely cooking, I suffered an epileptic attack that ended with me falling against the door of a hot oven,” she wrote. “I suffered third-degree burns on my chest, leg, and hand. I was rushed to hospital, and I’m still here. I’ve been here for the last five weeks (but who’s counting?).”
Liberman-Galon wrote that the love and support she has received from family, friends, and well-wishers prompted her to come forward publicly and share news of her condition “in order to return the favor with a good deed of my own.”
“Since I am confined to hospital, in pain and very limited in my movements, I decided that the virtual route is the most appropriate to send a clear message to the public: Epilepsy is not a dirty word. It’s not a source of shame, and there’s no reason to hide it. On the contrary, the more aware we are to this illness, the more we will be able to help and support those who are afflicted with it and their families.”
