The rape trial of two former Vanderbilt football players, which was set to begin this week, has been postponed until January to allow for the shoulder surgery of one of the defense attorneys, according to the Tennessean's Stacey Barchenger.
Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey, who are accused in the rape of a 21-year-old woman in an on-campus dorm room in July 2013.
Worrick Robinson, an attorney for Batey, missed the opening day of jury selection Monday while seeing a doctor
about a shoulder injury. On Tuesday, Robinson told the court the doctor recommended surgery next week.
Fletcher Long, an attorney for Vandenburg, objected to separating the trials, according to Barchenger, noting that his client's defense also relies upon experts from Batey's defense team. The judge agreed to delay the trial.
Two other co-defendants in the case, Brandon Banks and Jaborian McKenzie, are being tried separately. The four were dismissed from Vanderbilt's football team shortly after the incident occurred in June.
