Distance Learning Courses (DLC)

for professionals and enthusiasts

If you want to become a professional horologist, our distance learning courses in watchmaking and clockmaking are for you. You can learn at your own pace wherever it suits you (though we do run courses to assist distance learning students).

Passing the related exams will gain you BHI professional accreditation as a watchmaker or clockmaker, but there is no obligation to take them. You can do the course purely for your own interest if you wish.

Our home study courses have been running for over 50 years and are constantly being updated. They have helped guide many students into the profession.

two courses

There are two distance learning courses: Technician Grade and Combined Intermediate and Final Grade (Clock or Watch Pathway).

Each course contains a series of self-contained lessons and practical exercises. The concluding chapters include sample examination papers/test pieces and a comprehensive Examination Syllabus.

Membership is a requirement to purchase the DLC. This also gives you access to the members area, monthly copies of the Horological Journal and access to courses.

tutor feedback

For an additional fee, you can choose to purchase tutor feedback with your distance learning course in clock or watchmaking. This allows you to submit your answers to the end-of-lesson questions and also your practical test pieces for assessment by one of the BHI’s distance learning course tutors. This option is particularly useful for students who do not have access to a personal mentor or for those who are working towards qualifications.

Additional p&p for both courses is £25 for UK addresses, £80 for Europe and £175 for the rest of the world.  Material kits for the practical test pieces are available for under £30 from www.livesteammodels.co.uk.

Tutor feedback for the Technician Grade is £615 for 12 lessons.

For the Combined Intermediate and Final Grade, tutor feedback is £615 (theory only). Completed lessons should be posted to Upton Hall ‘For the attention of the DLC Tutor’ or emailed to education@bhi.co.uk.

Please note that there are no refunds on the purchase of DLCs.

examinations and qualifications

Our examinations are accredited by the regulatory body, Ofqual and are held each year in May/June.
