Close to 400 people attended Food Day LA on the South Lawn of City Hall on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. It was our best Food Day turnout yet! See ABC 7 reporter Lori Corbin's coverage of the event.

Highlighting Our Collective Impact

The theme this year was "Collective Impact"—we collaborated with LA Food Policy Council Working Group members, coalitions and partners to set up a dynamic, highly interactive showcase to highlight the diversity and leadership of LA's good food movement. We were excited to have Councilmembers Mitch O' Farrell, Curren Price, Jose Huizar, and Bob Blumenfield, Deputy Mayor Rick Cole and LAUSD Board Member Steve Zimmer speak, celebrating the success of the good food movement and reaffirming their commitment to key food policy issues.

Celebrating Good Food Champions of LA

Each LA City Councilmember recognized a Good Food Champion from his or her district, and we were proud to honor the recipients: individuals and organizations who help bring Good Food—food which is healthy, affordable, sustainable and fair—to their community. The Good Food Champions included community gardeners, neighborhood market owners, a health educator, a food pantry coordinator, and 'gangsta gardner' Ron Finley. Recognizing Our Good Food Providers

The South Lawn was packed with food, flowers and fun all Tuesday morning! Several Good Food Providers offered tasty seasonal eats for Food Day participants.

Councilmember O' Farrell recognized City departments, LAUSD, and their food service providers for their participation in the City's landmark Good Food Purchasing Pledge passed in 2012. Since adoption, the City and LAUSD have taken steps towards purchasing food that is local, sustainable, fair, healthy and humane.

* Convention Center (food service provider Levy Restaurants, supply chain partner Groundwork Coffee)
* Department of Aging (food service provider Morrison)
* Guckenheimer (food service provider for Google LA and Roll cafeterias)

We also recognized two exemplary farming operations that our City and LAUSD have purchased food from: Old Grove Orange and Muranaka Farm and their United Farm Worker employees.

Plug Mob & Flowers On Your Head for All!

Mud Baron and the Muir Ranch team held a Plug Mob, giving away free seedlings and plugs to support community and school gardens, and a "flowers on your head" photobooth using student-grown floral arrangements.

Special City Council Presentation on Food Day

Later in City Council Chambers, over 150 good food advocates stood in support as Councilmembers O'Farrell and Koretz presented a Food Day Resolution. Additionally, Councilmembers Koretz, Bonin and Huizar introduced an organics recycling and compost motion that would align LA's green waste recycling with new state measures.

'Til Next Year!
